Tens of thousands of traffic tickets are issued on Illinois roadways every year by the police. Generally, traffic tickets are classified as petty offenses that are punishable by a fine only. However, a conviction for a traffic citation can have other consequences! One such consequence may be suspension of your driving privileges.
If you are under 21 years of age and receive a mere two convictions within a two year period, your license will be suspended. Traffic laws change rapidly. Receiving Court Supervision is no longer guaranteed. The law limits the availability of Court Supervision to twice a year, and many courts will only allow it one time a year!
Additionally, petty traffic tickets may also lead to a suspension of your driving privileges without you even realizing it. The County Prosecutor is not under an obligation to notify you of the possible negative consequences a conviction can have on your license. Certain offenses such as failing to change lanes as you approach an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing while parked at the side of the road or passing a school bus, carry a suspension for a single offense.
If you are over 21 years old and receive three convictions in a year, your license will also be suspended.
